About Bluestem & Moss

Why Bluestem? Coming from the prairieland of Illinois, the big bluestem grasses (Andropogon gerardii) are a familiar sight of my youth and a common tool of prairie restoration. One of my favorite spots growing up was the forest preserve in my hometown. Sat upon a hill, with various native prairie grasses dancing in the breeze, you could see the surrounding valley-nestled town and farmland for miles.

Plus, blue is my favorite color ;)

The moss part might seem obvious for a moss artist, of course, but it also represents my current home in the Piedmont/Triangle of North Carolina. There are over 600 species of bryophytes (mosses and liverworts) indigenous to NC! The biodiversity of this state is unlike anything I’ve seen before moving here with mountains and beaches equidistant from my home in the temperate center. With all this natural beauty around, it’s hard not to be inspired to create art. Some of the found objects you will see in my work come from nature walks me and my friends take in our neighborhoods, bringing the forest home from us to you!
